Summer 2012 was very humid and warm in Hamden

Since it’s September the meteorological Summer of June through August has now ended.

Here is a summary of the weather conditions at my station in Hamden.

Was a generally cool month with some warmer periods. The first week featured some very cool lows and highs. June 4th was the coldest day with a low of 48 and a high of 61. It was more typical of mid-April. On June 20th, the first day of Summer, the high temperature hit 95, making it the hottest day since July of 2011. Along with the temperature, the heat index max hit 110, and dew point max of 77.

There was a total of five 90 degree days.

The average high was 77 and low was 58.

Rainfall was common during the first 3 weeks of the month, in fact the total rainfall amounted to 6.49

Was a very warm and more importantly a humid month. Dew points exceeded 70 degrees on 14 days, which made for an uncomfortable experience. Most of the time dew points were in the 60s. July 10th however, stands out as the exception with the dew point only in the lower 50s!

The hottest day was July 18th at 99, along with a dew point high of 78 and a heat index high of 116!

The coolest low temperature was 57 on July 22nd.

There was a total of 4 days of 90 degrees or greater, and the average high was 85 and low was 66.

Rainfall was limited during the first few weeks. However, the later part of the month featured more rain and the total amounted to 4.75, which was fairly close to normal.

Featured warm conditions with periods of exceptional humidity. Temperatures were frequently only in the 80s. However, dew points on 6 days exceeded 75, and on Aug. 5th the dew point hit 80 degrees, which was the warmest of the summer and my warmest since keeping records in 2008.

The hottest high temperature waited until the last day, the 31st, with 91 degrees. Interesting enough a day before on the 30th, was the coldest low temperature of the month at 51, with the lowest dew point of August at 46.

There was a total of just 2 days of 90 degrees or greater, and the average high was 83, low was 63.

Rainfall was fairly common during the first 3 weeks. In fact, the 10th had the most rain at 2.43”. The total for the month was 5.57, a bit above normal.

Putting all this data together, for the 3 month period, the temperature average was 81.5 for a high and 62 for a low. The mean was 71, and we also had a total of 11 days with 90 degree or warmer weather. Not all that impressive for temperature actually. I think the standout though is the dew point exceeded 70 degrees 33 times during the period. That really made for a much more uncomfortable experience causing it to feel much hotter than it actually was. At other times the dew points were mostly in the 60s, which is still considered humid! So average temps in the 80s frequently felt more like 90 to 95 degrees due to the excessive humidity, and as a result air- conditioning use was certainly a bit above normal!

Rainfall over the three month period amounted to an impressive 16.81 inches, so it was certainly not a dry summer! Frequent thunderstorms were the main cause for the heavy rain totals. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
