Now that winter is finally beginning to show it's ugly face, I find myself starting to deal with the same old snow issues around my house. Sand... check. Salt... check. Snow brush... check.
Sure, these are the normal preparations. But I take it a step further. See, I hate shoveling snow, and I am a lazy, lazy man. So anything I can do to help make the snow removal process a bit easier is always welcome. Hopefully some of these shortcuts find their way into your tactics in the battle against winter.
1. Tarp - My deck loves gathering ice. The wood warms up quick, and freezes even quicker. Rather than shovel so that my dog can make it outside, I began laying down a small tarp right outside the door. In windy snow storms, I find the snow blows right off the tarp. Otherwise, when I let the dog out, I step outside, shake off the tarp, and keep the deck ice and snow free. Also a great tool for keeping car windows from freezing up.
2. Wheelbarrow - After a few big snow storms pile up, seeing over the snow banks can be a problem. Throwing some snow in a wheelbarrow and moving it to a less obtrusive area of the driveway or yard helps alleviate this problem.
3. Kitty Litter - Kitty Litter??? Yes, kitty litter. This stuff is great for traction, and because it's not as hard as sand or salt, it's pretty safe for all surface, and is especially pet safe.
4. Storm Drain - If you happen to live near a storm drain, it's a great place to push snow when you need to get rid of it. It's warmer down there, and the constantly flowing water melts any snow that lands in the water. Stomping on snow is far easier than shoveling snow.
5. Leaf Blower - Yeah, when it's a small, light, fluffy snow, sometimes a leaf blower is the easiest way to get snow off of walkways, steps, and even cars. Plus, it's a great way to ambush an unsuspecting family member.
