Connecticut is known for having wild weather year-around, but here are some HOT facts about heat in the winter for Hartford, CT.
January: The average high may be 34 degrees, but sometimes we get into the 50s. 60s you say? That happens sometimes, but 70s? Did you know that the all-time record high in January is 72 degrees, on January 6th, 2007. That wasn't even all that long ago. Is climate change to blame? Not so fast...the second all-time high for January was set way back in 1932, when the mercury soared to 70 degrees!
February: The average high "warms" up to 37, but this month historically has not been much hotter. In fact, the record high is only one degree warmer at 73, which was set back in 1985. Did you know that the last time Hartford hit 70 degrees in February was 27 years ago, in 1985! Take that global "warming"!
March: Okay, March is a wacky month. The average high for March 1st is 42, but by the 31st, it soars to 54. How warm has it gotten this month? 80? 85? Try hotter... Did you know that on March 31st, 1998, the temperature skyrocketed to 89 degrees?! The final days of March 1998 were remarkably warm. In fact, huge crowds flocked to State beaches to try to cool off. 80s are actually not all that unheard of in March...The mercury has reached at least 82 degrees 10 times since records began, although 4 of those times were in 1998. One final tidbit about wacky weather. On March 31st, 1997, a historic spring snow storm began to impact the area. 365 days later, the region was in the midst of a week of 80+ degrees temperatures. That's crazy!
December: Let's not forget December... 1998 was also a warm year for December. Did you know that 2 of the top 5 temperatures ever recorded in December happened in 1998? The all-time December high temperature was 76 on December 7th, 1998.
The bottom line: Just because it's winter does not mean you won't need those shorts or a tank-top every once in a while...
