Have you ever wondered what freezing rain is. Well, freezing rain starts off as a rain drop in a cloud that is usually just above freezing. For freezing rain to occur, conditions have to be just right. As some of you may know the higher you go up in altitude usually the cooler it is. But for this phenomenon to happen, it must be colder at the surface. As a droplet falls, if conditions are right and it’s colder near the surface then the droplet will freeze. This is what we know as freezing rain. The littlest temperature shift will mess this up. If all the layers are above freezing then it will just fall as rain, and if they’re below it will fall as a snowflake, or a sleet pellet. This is one of the most dangerous natural forces. What’s worse then widespread power outages and zero ability to drive a vehicle? Sounds exciting for all the weather weenies but not for the average everyday person. It leaves a beautiful aftermath with its frosty look. But don’t let this fool you because it can be deadly!
