We only think about it during the really hot days.  Yesterday I walked down the street in New Haven, and smelled the smell of summer camp.  No, not dirty socks, I'm talking about sunscreen.  It certainly was hot yesterday so it makes sense that people were wearing sunscreen, right?  Well today I went out to get lunch, walked in the same area yet didn't see any shiny faces or the smell of suntan lotion.  Does the lack of heat help avoid us from caramelizing in the sun?

Here's where peoples #1 tanning misconception comes in, and it's one that can potentially kill you!  The ability for you to get sunburned has absolutely nothing to do with temperature, and everything to do with what time of the year it is, and how clear it is.  Yesterday the skies were clear, and they were today.  Since today is even closer to the summer solstice, you'll actually get burned faster today that you would have yesterday, even though temperatures were 20 degrees warmer yesterday.

Interestingly enough, the suns angle is just as high today as it will be on August 22nd.  So what does this mean to you?  It means that if you slap on the spf 50 during the month of August, you should be doing it during May as well!  Skin cancer can be deadly, and it doesn't take much to protect yourself from getting it.

Be safe out there!
