The Connecticut Department of Energy & Environmental Protection (DEEP) in collaboration with The University of Connecticut have released bathymetric (lake contour) maps to the public via the DEEP's website. There are detailed bathymetric maps of over 150 lakes in Connecticut. These maps are available in PDF format and can be downloaded to any smartphone or computer and can also be printed out. Download the Maps HERE.
Bathymetric maps are similar to topographic maps, in that they provide details about the terrain of a landscape. In the case of a bathymetric map, the terrain that is described is underwater. These maps show lake depths and describe other contour features found on the lake floor.
Bathymetric maps help scientists by giving them enough information to calculate things lake surface area, lake volume, average depths, and fetch distances. The maps also help them determine a lake's ability to support animals such as fish and birds.
These maps are also important to boaters and fishermen alike as they provide surface navigation information. Anglers can also use the maps to spot areas where lake depth changes rapidly; where larger predatory fish can often be found.
