The hummingbirds showed up at our feeders on Monday, April 23rd. I caught this guy resting on the window feeder this morning. This feeder is attached to our kitchen window and is an endless source of entertainment.
Scientists have been reporting an advance of the bird migrations with the warming climate. The problem is, that the insects and nectars these birds are expecting are not in sync with the migrations yet, and the birds have been having trouble finding adequate foods. Now I am glad that I set up my feeders earlier than ever.
Planting native plants helps to support the bird populations. It has been shown that more insects feed on the natives than on the foreign species and cultivars. Native oaks support more insect populations than any other tree or shrub. And all kinds of birds feed on these insects. This inter-relationship between the insects that feed on our trees and the birds that feed on those insects is important to preserve.
