Here we go again. The National Weather Service has issued a freeze warning across most of the state, with the exception of Southern Fairfield county. Basically winter is back and summer is canceled! Okay that was a joke. I'm actually a warm weather lover, but this is really interesting stuff considering we had such warm temperatures a few weeks ago. Check out the map above to see the locations across the state with freeze warnings. Here's the weird thing. Right now the entire state has a freeze warning, with the exception of Southern Fairfield County.
As a meteorologist, I know that Southern New London County tends to be influenced by the ocean more than anywhere else across the state. In the summer, they average the coldest high temperature, and in the winter they average the warmest low temps. Why you might ask? Well I'm kind of getting off topic but here's deal. Our weather frequently comes from the west. Not always, but often times we have a southwesterly flow, and what's to the southwest of Groton? Water is!
The ocean influences this area the most, because they are sticking out near the water the most across the state. Because water takes longer to heat and cool, when the temperatures spike farther inland, these shoreline locations lag behind. With that being said, for the night tonight, our winds will be out of the northwest, limiting the ocean influence for our state. This begs the question, "Why is there a freeze warning across the state, and only a watch in Southern Fairfield County?" To this, I don't have an answer to, and considering the National Weather Service office in Upton, NY covers all of the shoreline counties, I must be missing something here! Nonetheless, it will be cold tonight, and should drop below freezing for much of the state with clear skies and light winds out of the northwest.
Bring those plants in tonight...even if you live in Milford!
