After looking up the weather on Mother's Day over the past few decades, I was intrigued by what I found out...

Cool fact
Not only was Sunday's high temperature of 84 degrees quite warm for Mother's Day history, but the temperatures on Mother's Day have generally been on the cooler side...

Since 1994
The average high temperature on Mother's Day has been 63 degrees. (not including 2012)
This is a whole 6 to 7 degrees below what the normal temperature is for the same date.

Why so cool?
One thought is that early May is often a transitional period. We are typically moving away from the April shower/wet season and moving closer towards summer. So, while things may be warming up, they haven't quite been all that toasty by the time Mother's Day rolls around.

Warmest since 1993, or even before that?
Although the high temperature reached 86 degrees on Mother's Day 1993, there is an interesting twist. The low temperature for that date was 46 degrees. That makes the average temperature for the day 66 degrees.
If we look at 2012, the high temperature was 84 degrees, but the low only fell to 52 degrees. That makes the average temperature for Sunday 68 degrees, making it the overall warmest Mother's Day since before 1993.

The stats haven't been looked at prior to that year, but they will be further researched.

All temperatures and averages are official statistics for Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks, CT.
