This week begins the lightning safety awareness week. It started on Sunday June 24th, and it will run all the way until Saturday June 30th. Today, we look at the fundamentals of lightning safety and some facts. About 54 people are struck and killed every year in the United States. 80% of the victims are male, even more than that. Some people are struck directly from the bolt, and some are effected from the current in the ground. Here are a couple tips for today...
1. When thunder roars, go indoors!
2. Wait at least 30 minutes before the last clap of thunder to head back outdoors.
3. Do not let blue sky fool you or sun. Storms may be off in the distance which could still cause lightning.
If you are inside don't put your hands on anything metal (or anything that conducts electricity) and stay away from windows.
If a person is struck by lightning, CALL 911. Do not hesitate, it will save the persons life. If you know how to perform CPR perform it if it is necessary to do so.
Lightning injury's and deaths can be prevented if you follow the simple safety steps. And this most important one, seek shelter if you hear thunder or see lightning.
Tomorrow the topic will be the science of lightning.
