NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) -- If you need some help beating the heat there are cooling centers set up in cities and towns across the state.

In the extreme heat, one of the things we always tell you is to take it slow, but there's always someone who just wants to sweat a little more.

"How are you feeling so far," News 8's Kent Pierce asked jogger, Erin Appleman.

"Good - I'm not working too hard,' she replied.

"And you go out early."

"I'm out early to avoid the afternoon sun and I try to jog in the shade."

"And you're staying hydrated?"

"Yup."

Staying hydrated is so important in the heat, so stay away from alcohol and caffeine.

Here's another important tip, don't leave and pets or kids in a car. Even in the shade it gets too hot.

Every summer people get sick and die because they don't take precautions during a heat wave. Around 4 dozen deaths in the US are already blamed on the heat so far this summer. One of the easiest things to do is dress in lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothes.

If you're not used to the heat, and the air conditioning is out at home, you can head to a cooling center.
