...there's a Blue Moon a'comin!
Did you know that tonight's full moon is not the only full moon this month?
No, I'm not talking about the kind you see when your buddy bends over after having a few too many beers and... well, you know lol. I'm talking about up there in the wild Blue yonder.
Did you know that this very month - August 2012 - will offer us a rare sight? Yes! We have a Blue Moon this month!
Get out your mugs and slice up your oranges! lol
The first full moon of August is tonight and then the second full moon aka the Blue Moon will occur at the end of this month on August 31st. So August 2012 is the middle of a Full Moon sandwich! Does that make the Earth the center of a Moon Pie this August? hehee
A little background for you: The term "Blue Moon" can be the second full moon in a calendar month - Like the one at the end of this month - or it can be the third of four full moons in a single season. The most common is the 2 full moons in a calendar month. It's really not that rare... once in every 2.7 years is the average.
Tonight's full moon will be time stamped at 11:27 p.m. EDT August 1 2012 - that's tonight folks!! Then on August 31 2012 it will return in all its glory as a Blue Moon!! Don't miss it! There will not be another Blue Moon until July of 2015.
Another fun fact is that there can be two Blue Moons in one calendar year! The last time it happened was in 1999. (January and March) There was no full moon in February that year! The next year that will have double Blue Moons (hahaaa not at the same time... thought wouldn't that be a cool sight!) will be in 2018.
The Blue Moon is not actually Blue. I'm honestly not sure where that name came from. Rumor has it that no one really knew what to call them. Maybe whoever named it was sad that night lol I don't know. Usually the full moons are named after something relevant to the month or season.
A few examples:
February: Hunger Moon
April: Egg Moon
July: Thunder Moon
August: Green Corn Moon
September: Fruit Moon
October: Hunter's Moon
November: Beaver Moon
December: Long Night Moon
I leave you with one final thought: What do you get if you milk a cow during a Blue Moon? Blue Cheese! (I know it was lame and made no sense but I bet you giggled like I did anyway!)
Thanks for taking time to stop by to visit and have a groovy kind of day!
~Missy
p.s. Keep an eye out for a Smurf or two this month! Oooh! Hahaaa!
