The map above shows the NWS location current temps as of 6:00am on 9/12/12. Widespread 40s but notice two interesting things:

1. NYC heat island is in the mid 60s while White Plains is in mid 50s and north of there in the 40s.

2. Adirondak Airport temp (36) is lower than Mount Washington(41)

The 5000' layer was at 8°C for Mt. Washington and 12°C for Adirondak.

So if the layer on top of the mountain was colder than the layer on top of upstate NY, how was the mountain top warmer? You can even see the areas around Mt. Washington in the 30s too.

Well, under high pressures and clear calm nights, valleys can get colder than mountains due to the cold air sliding down the mountain slopes.

Here were the current temp OBS from around the area. Coastal CT and Hartford in the 50s. Inland in the 40s again.
