The first big rain and wind storm of the season is right on track to attack Connecticut on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The storm is a one-two punch with the bulk of the moisture coming up from the Gulf of Mexico. But that moisture will get added "lift" with the second feature, a cold front coming out of the Great Lakes.

Showers & storms could begin overnight tonight through the rush hour Tuesday morning. Although any storms could feature some heavier downpours, it looks to be pretty scattered at this point and I don't see any major problems early on Tuesday.

On Tuesday afternoon, the rain will become more widespread, heavier and steadier, especially the second half of the afternoon. By this point, the big story will be the wind. In fact, a High Wind Watch is now in effect for all of Connecticut from Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday morning for gusts over 50mph.

The worst conditions will be anytime from late Tuesday afternoon into Tuesday evening and up until about sunrise Wednesday. This is when the actual front will be coming though with the potential for some strong to severe storms, heavy downpours and more wind.

Flooding concerns will arise along the shoreline as the southerly wind picks up all day Tuesday. As far as flash flooding - that will be dependent upon the intensity of the stronger storms late Tuesday. While flooding may not be widespread, pockets of heavier rain could lead to isolated flooding.

On average, rainfall totals look to be in the 1-2" range, but again, the heavier downpours with the storms will put some folks in the 2-3" range.

Although there could be some showers left over for the morning commute Wednesday, it really looks like the worst of the storms will be east of the area by around 9am and dry weather will be working in with a very strong northwesterly wind that will also keep things much cooler Wednesday afternoon and Thursday.
