The temperature fell to 38 degrees on October 13th at Central Park, NYC.

It seems as if the urban heat island effect in New York City has become more and more pronounced every year. With that said, they fell below 40 degrees this October earlier than in any previous year, dating back to 2001.

Earliest
Between 2002 and 2011, Central Park had not once fallen below 40 degrees on or prior to October 13th in a season. The last time such a feat did happen was back on October 8th, 2001, when the temperature fell to 39 degrees.
You have to go back one more year, to 2000, when the mercury fell to 38 degrees so early in a season. It was on October 9th, 2000, when the temperature fell to 38 degrees in Central Park.

A sign of a cold winter?
It's far too early to say how this might affect the upcoming winter. One thing is fact though: to date, Central Park is actually below average in temperature so far for October. In recent memory, below normal temperatures have been very hard to come by.

From April 2011 to September 2012
Central Park was above average in temperature for 14 out of 15 months.
The only month during that span to be below average was June 2012, which was only 0.4F below average.
