With the impending hybrid storm Sandy, you need to not only make the normal preps, you need to think about your frozen and refrigerated food.

GENERATORS: if you have one great. Just plug the refrigerator in and your good to go.  However if you are like me and either can not afford one or can’t get one, then you need this.

DO NOT: open and close the freezer and refrigerator doors.  You want to keep the cold in there and opening the doors defeats the purpose.

BEFORE: the storm arrives turn up the freezer and refrigerator to the coldest settings available.

Buy Ice:  Most modern freezers are well insulated.  Add the bags of ice with your food and it will help to ensure they stay frozen longer.  It will help if you also tightly pack your food close together.

CoolersL Set up one or more up with ice and put in your refrigerator contents like Milk eggs etc,.  Hint: here put your eggs in a bag or a plastic egg carrier.   The paper cartons will shred in water.

If you are of power several days this will help keep your food safe.  However after being without power for nine days I found this was not good for a long term.

Play it safe if your frozen food is thawed out throw it out.  Don’t get food poisoning.
