Although a hurricane is approaching, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) made it clear that they will NOT be issuing Hurricane Watches or Warnings for the Northeast.

It's a move that is confusing to many, but the NHC depends their case.

Explanation:
Since Hurricane Sandy is expected to transition FROM a Hurricane TO a nor'easter, the NHC feels that now is the time to stop issuing any further Tropical Storm and/or Hurricane Watches and Warnings. They feel that it will be "highly disruptive" if they wait until later on to change the watches and warnings.

"FIRST A NOTE ON THE NWS WARNING STRATEGY FOR SANDY. IN ORDER TO AVOID THE RISK OF A HIGHLY DISRUPTIVE CHANGE FROM TROPICAL TO NON-TROPICAL WARNINGS WHEN SANDY BECOMES POST-TROPICAL...THE WIND HAZARD NORTH OF THE TROPICAL STORM WARNING AREA WILL CONTINUE TO BE CONVEYED THROUGH HIGH WIND WATCHES AND WARNINGS WARNINGS ISSUED BY LOCAL NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE OFFICES."

It must be stressed that regardless of what "type" of storm it's called, it's a powerful one that will cause severe problems up and down the East Coast.

NHC:
"WHETHER SANDY IS OFFICIALLY TROPICAL OR POST-TROPICAL AT LANDFALL WILL HAVE LITTLE BEARING ON THE IMPACTS."
