There are the things we usually do to prepare for a storm, you know, stock up on water, food, batteries... I'm sure you all have your routines. What about laundry? You have time and maybe some things that would be needed aren't exactly user-friendly right now. How about your winter blankets... if Sandy knocks out power you're going to want clean warm blankies! We are also transitioning into the colder weather, are your winter clothes ready if you need them fast?
Pretend you have to pack for an extended camping trip... what would you need? What do you use every day that you don't even think about needing until you go to use it? As you go about your routines today and tomorrow, pay attention to what you are doing and ask yourself: If the power goes out how will I do x y or z?
A friend of mine is filling up ziplock bags with water to fill the empty spaces in the freezer. You will keep your freezer full as well have water when it melts. A full freezer stays colder longer. (Unless you keep opening it lol)
Be realistic, keep your eyes and ears open but why not treat this like an adventure? The storm is coming no matter what. This will be in the record books no matter if Sandy fizzles or slams us. We are going to be a part of history that you can tell your kids kids about! Sandy is on her way, we have no control over her and as for what happens we won't know until she leaves us however... how you handle it is in your control.
If you have young kids - or older ones, they will take cues from YOU and remember that your body language speaks volumes. I remember as a kid one winter storm that knocked out the power (and the water because we had a well) my parents made breakfast on the grill on the porch and we kind of treated it like camping. I'm sure they were a wreck with 4 young kids in the midst of a storm and no power but in my childhood memory bank, I remember it as fun.
Remember this: If you lose water... you get one flush. Make it count lol.
