The sea-surface analysis shows significant water temperature anomalies.
With 2012 being a relatively warm year, the ocean temperatures were unusually warm this summer. That trends continues and this could have major implications for the rest of the fall and into the winter season.
Analysis:
Temperatures over the waters southeast of New England are anywhere from 4 to 6C warmer than average. Putting this into perspective, that means the temperatures are roughly 7 to 10F warmer than average. This is a HUGE anomaly.
Discussion:
The water temperatures right near the coast from NC to CT are close to average, but the Gulf Stream is showing significant positive anomalies. The implication here is that there is more heat content and fuel for low pressure systems. Whether it be a hurricane moving up the coast or a nor'easter developing offshore, the impact could be significant.
