An earthquake rattled much of New England and surrounding areas Tuesday night.
Although the earthquake was not particularly damaging, it was still relatively impressive for this part of the world.
Details:
The earthquake was originally reported as a 4.6 magnitude quake, but the USGS scaled that back to a 4.0. Regardless, that's still a relatively strong earthquake to be reported in New England.
The epicenter of the earthquake was about 6 kilometers north-northeast of Waterboro, Maine. The depth of the earthquake was only about 4 miles underneath the Earth's surface. Due to the fact that the center was not all that deep as far as earthquakes go explains why so many around the region felt distinct trembles.
Connecticut:
Dozens of towns and communities across the state felt the earthquake, but no significant damage was reported.
James from Haddam, "...house on the river shook violently and windows rattled."
Kim Falzarano said alarms went off at Target in Ansonia where her daughter works.
Borges Victor from Trumbull reported that cabinets rattled.
Earthquake history:
Although not common, earthquakes impact Connecticut from time to time. Back on October 23rd of 2011, a 5.8 magnitude earthquake centered in Virginia was felt up and down the East Coast.
The last earthquake to cause moderate damage was back in 1940 when a 5.6 magnitude quake was centered in central New Hampshire.
