Heavy snow may cause big headaches for the afternoon commute.
2 p.m.
A band of moderate to heavy snow has set up across the western half of Connecticut. Much of the area has already seen an inch of snowfall. This heavy snow will continue for areas along I-84, I-91 and the Merritt Parkway. Lighter snow and some mixed precipitation is occurring over eastern parts of the state.
Forecast:
Periods of locally heavy snow will accumulate on roads and cause travel headaches, mainly across western Connecticut. Cities like Danbury, Waterbury, Meriden and even Hartford and New Haven can expect slippery roads. The back roads will be hit the hardest.
Many areas could have 2 to 4 inches of snow on the ground by 5 p.m.
***This means that the evening commute could be a big mess.
Discussion:
The band of snow is being closely monitored. It looks like it is setting up and stalling over the area outlined in red above. The Storm Prediction Center has also released a mesoscale update saying that snowfall rates could reach 1 inch per hour in western Connecticut. If the heavy snow continues after the sunset, temperatures will drop and higher than forecast snowfall amounts COULD be possible.
